Kalimpong, April 28: A cross-country race was flagged off from this hill town today in an effort to keep students engaged in sports and other constructive activities.
Organised by Himalshree Athletics Club, the “First P.T. Bhutia Cross-Country Race” had about 120 participants from 10 schools in Kalimpong.
Club president Dhendup Bhutia said: “This being the silver jubilee year for our club we wanted to do something special for the children. We wish to provide avenues so that the youths do something constructive and do not get trapped in drug abuse. Since it will be an annual event, they will prepare for it through the year.” The club plans to organise events round the year.
The boys’ category of the race, which spanned 15 km, was won by Suman Rumtel from Scottish University Missionary Institute followed by Isaac Rai and Santosh Suman, from the same school. In the girls’ section, the race spanned 12 km and the first prize was bagged by Saraswati Thapa from Kalimpong Government High School .
Neema Moti Tamang from Gangotri High School was placed second and Domeet Lepcha of KGHS came in third.
