KALIMPONG, July 25. — The Swatantra Nari Sangathan (SNS), a voluntary women’s organisation from Topkhana is all to set an example for citizens here.
Claiming that not municipality’s role in cleansing dirt is not enough, this organisation carried out a drive to clean the area of ward number 7.
Swatantra Nari Sangathan secretary Mrs Swastika Chettri said that their main objective is to educate the masses. “The municipality vehicle arrives every morning but it hardly stops for more than 10 minutes”, Mrs Chettri claimed.
“Besides we had even approached the municipality requesting for dustbins but they haven’t responded as yet“, she said.
The Swatantra Nari Sangathan, which was formed a year ago — comprises of 62 members whitewashed the walls and also asked the locals to help them in cleaning and maintaining a healthy and clean environment.
Ward councilor Mr Norden Lama termed the act as exemplary example. “We don’t have any dustbins in the area and moreover houses have been built over the drains”, he said. Significantly, the Swatantra Nari Sangathan is planning to meet the state municipal affairs minister Mr Ashok Bhattacharya to tell him about the current affairs. The Swatantra Nari Sangathan will also be hosting a free eye camp at the Pranami Vidya Mandir this week.
