Dooars rallying cry for Gorkhas

KALIMPONG, Aug. 31. — Demanding inclusion of the Dooars, especially the five Assembly constituencies of Jalpaiguri district, in the DGHC, members of the Dooars Gorkha Welfare Organisation (DGWO) will send separate memorandums to the UPA chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Union home minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, ahead of the crucial tripartite talks in New Delhi in the third week of September.
The DGWO spokesperson, Mr Udhab Subari, said the much-talked about yatra to demand the inclusion of the five Assembly constituencies in the DGHC would commence from Kalchini and end at Darjeeling. “We have raised our various demands in the past but they have fallen on deaf ears. We will look into the situation and then submit a memorandum to the GNLF in Darjeeling”, Mr Subari told The Statesman over telephone from Jaigaon.
The demands, though, will mainly stress upon the inclusion of the five Assembly constituencies of Jalpaiguri district — Mal-Matelli, Nagarkatta, Madhrihat, Kalchini and Kumargarm — in the DGHC.
“It is a fact that a major portion of these areas have been a part of Darjeeling district in the past. So there should not be any problem for its inclusion again”, Mr Subari said. The GNLF supremo, Mr Subash Ghisingh, leaves for New Delhi for tripartite talks in the third week of September.
The DGWO members have also met the state tribal minister and the chief minister to press their demands. “We will also be writing to the UPA chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and the Prime Minister,” said Mr Subari.Significantly, the DGWO had played a key role during the GNLF agitation.
Incidentally, though the DGHC chairman, Mr Subash Ghisingh, has now softened his stand on the inclusion of Siliguri and Dooars in the DGHC, various social as well as political organisations of the Gorkhas have come forward with the same demand. The delimitation hearing has been fixed for 5 September in Siliguri.
