Casual workers unhappy with forest dept

KALIMPONG, Oct. 24. — At a time when the forest department seems to be moving forward with its projects of promoting tourism, the CITU affiliated Darjeeling District Forest Casual Daily Labour (CDL) Union in a meeting today expressed their annoyance over the working style of the department.
Relating the problems faced by the daily workers within the department CDL district secretary Mr Suraj Pathak, said: “Despite having worked for more than 15 years the CDL/DL ( daily labourers) have not been regularised.” The union has identified almost 200 of those who have been facing this problem.
“However in a meeting with the high officials at Kolkata last year it has been fixed that names of everyone who have been engaged at a causal basis will be listed. But that’s being violated by some of the forest officials here,” he alleged.
The union also lamented that payment of arrears and wages according to the Minimum Wages Act (MWA) is not being implemented by the department. Regarding these issues a conference of the union is scheduled to be held at Darjeeling on 20 November.
