Kalimpong, Dec. 21: GNLF chief Subash Ghisingh’s visit today, after a gap of five years, came as a surprise to residents and GNLF leaders alike.
Ghisingh’s visit, which lasted for an hour, was aimed at inspection of the new water reservoir-cum-park being constructed at Sherpa Gaon near Deolo, about 5 km from here. Not wanting to speak much, Ghisingh said: “I have just come here to inspect the work under way at the reservoir. I will be back soon to see how other projects, undertaken by the DGHC here, are progressing.” However, he did not specify the date of his next visit.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 85 lakh, the reservoir at Sherpa Gaon has a capacity of around 10 lakh gallon. Plans are afoot to bring water there from the Tukchu source, 35 km from here.
Pakhrin, who admitted that he had no prior knowledge of Ghisingh’s visit, said: “Though we did not know he was coming, we are glad about his visit. He told us to prepare the ground for the construction of another reservoir with a similar capacity.”
Ghisingh also instructed GNLF leaders to have more people from Kalimpong set up stalls at Teesta Tourism Carnival Festival. The festival will be held at the confluence of Teesta and Rangit from January 12 to 17.
Ghisingh last came to the area when he visited Rellie, 8 km from here, in January 2000 to attend a fair.
