Kalimpong, Jan. 23: Residents of 10th Mile this year came together to celebrate the 109th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Till last year, the only programme commemorating Netaji’s birthday was organised by the state information and cultural affairs department at Town Hall here.
One of the organisers of the programme at 10th Mile, Pasang Sherpa, said: “This is the first time we are holding this kind of a programme. Through this, we wish to remember Netaji’s contribution to the nation.
Apart from his role in the freedom movement, Netaji is particularly significant for us as there were a lot of Gorkhas in the Indian National Army.”
The programme, which was held on the street, had speeches by prominent figures of the locality and a cultural programme in the evening. People also put khadas (traditional scarves) on the picture of Netaji.
Chief guest of the programme Dhendup Bhutia lauded the people’s initiative and urged them to remember the deeds of the freedom fighters. Bhutia was the vice-chairman of the civic body here.
At the annual Town Hall programme, Netaji’s portrait was garlanded followed by speeches by the guests.
