Kalimpong, March 26: The heads of ICSE and CBSE schools in Kalimpong have denied the allegation that the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had demanded money from them.
Bengal urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya while accusing the Morcha of extorting money from the schools in the hills had claimed the party had demanded Rs 2 crore from the heads of the institutions at a meeting held in Gorubathan on March 1.
A resolution adopted jointly by the Kalimpong unit of the Janamukti Secondary Teachers’ Organisation (JSTO) and the head teachers accused Bhattacharya of levelling baseless allegations to malign the image of the Morcha. “We did not discuss money at all,” said A. Sampayo, the principal of Dr Graham’s Homes. Bhisan Roka, the JSTO spokesperson in Kalimpong, said the school heads had at the March-1 meeting offered to sponsor Adivasi students and children from violence-hit areas of the Dooars in institutions here.
Following requests from the school heads, the JSTO has agreed to intimate important party programmes to them. E.B. Sherpa, the chief coordinator of JSTO’s ICSE and CBSE cell, has been assigned the job. “Our only concern is to ensure the smooth running of schools,” said Sampayo.
