This page contains a list of schools and institutes in Kalimpong along with some relevant information about them. Hopefully this list will be useful for prospective students or parents/guardians etc.
I have long wanted to set this list up but only got around to doing it now. The information has been collected from various sources. I would like to thank all those who helped by contributing tidbits of info, especially the good folks of the Darjeeling Forum, and lots of thanks to SP for compiling the information.
This list is in no way comprehensive or complete at this moment so please expect to see errors or omissions. If you do spot any, please drop me a line to let me know, or say so in the comments thread below.
If there are any schools/institutes in Kalimpong that I’ve missed out, please do let me know. I’d be grateful for any information that will help me “fill-in-the-blanks” below. 😀

-Update: Thanks to Mr. Vimal Khawas for providing additional information.
The state board schools like SUMI, Kumudini had nepali as the medium of instruction (with books written in Nepali till class V) till about 10-12 years ago. However, the government of west bengal keeping in mind the importance of english instructed these schools to follow english in primary standard. Although by and large teachers in these schools still teach in Nepali (mode of lecture), but the books are written in English.

Good info about school…..I guess thatz what Kalimpong is famous for.Is the backbone of the economy there………….but the present condition is really deteriorating the name……for the past couple of years many outstation student are leaving and prefer to study in elsewhere..Can’t blame them…..It was said to me by an Educationalist there, that after the long agitation in the ’80, it took several years to regain the name and trust…….as history repeats itself, it seem to me that the same is happening……sad to say that the white Kanchanjunga is red now…..As per “Gorkhaland” is concerned it seem to me that , itz not how we get it but who brings it. I wish the hills were as beautiful as itz name and nature.
i am from the mentioned school i.e. pranami balika vidhya mandir.i went through the above list and i saw the medium of pranami school has been written as Nepali but i completed my MP & HS in english medium so how come now its nepali medium pliz do rectify the above list.

Great work! keep it up.Proud to be associated with S.U.M.I.(Scottish Universities Mission Institution). There’s a correction to be made It’s Sutherland Memorial Primary Section(S.M.P.S.)and not Sutherland Memorial Nursery School. Please mention that our school is celebrating it’s 125th anniversary in 2011.
East and West but home (Kalimpong) is best.
Yes, as a product of St Joseph’s Convent (in those days they took in li’l boys!) and eventually Goethals Memorial School my heart belongs to Kalimpong, after all it’s home.
Excellent work, keep up the good work. regarding S.U.M.I.’s info it’s Sutherland Memorial Primary Section and not Sutherland Memorial Nursery School. The School is also celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2011.
st jopesh convent is not gud 4 comon people only 4 future cluny sisters because it only fuilfill the demand of 19th century of their foundress bl.anne marie jahovey not of present days……………………..
I HATE SISTERS SKUL ESPECIALLY CLUNY SISTERS SCHOOL
i did a great mistake by being a sister
i will talk the qualities of cluny sisters
cluny sisters are worse in the nepalese society they will not be able 2 fuilfill the demand of 21st century i fell pity 4 each cluny sisters they r nt capable in any field

Everyone in Kalimpong specially to my school “SUMI”.I leaved this school when i passed madhyamic exam 2008… I missed this school a lot.Our headmaster, teachers, friends, all who is related to this school i miss very them much..Now i am in college in 1st year.I was happy when my best friend “ARPAN KR LIMBU” got a guiter in Marit Award.I really missed a cheer up in 15 and 16 august when our school alwys reach a football fianl.
Seeing the state of Government High School, Kalimpong it hurts! Someone has to do something now; the school authorities should come up with plan to face-lift the Schhol.
when sumi boys goes marching on there will be a new tomorrow when sumi boys goes marching on
I am a nepalese student from Nepal..It was a memorable moment when my dad first took me Kalimpong for my further studies…And then, It was 2002..when i left Kalimpong after completion of my Madhyamik exam from Kalimpong girl’s High/higher school. Now am a LLB final year sudent.in nepal itself….whenver i get free time… i crazily wen for searching my school’s websites..and its some recent picures… so that it would help my memoreis get refreshed…but as usual…. it desperate me…. coz… i failed to get any information. Thanks to this web-page, atleast i got some information..
Those days….. Girls School and SUMI were used to be in good bond of relationship…….. Like participation in curricular activities…..etc.. N The famous tution class.. of Prakash sir…where……. rush of sudents mostly from girls and SUMI
I still remember.we girls from Girls’High School USed to Tease..SUMI Guys as “S-some…… U-unique……. M-monkeys…. I-(of) India.
Plz…SUMI Guys dnt mind………
You guys reminded me of my SUMI days. I passed out from SuMI in the year 1982. Let me share with you all one moment of my sumi days. One day a girl from Girls’ High School complained to our the then principal, shree P. R. Pradhan that one of the boys sitting in the gallery in front of the Primary Section and facing the road, had passed a comment and thrown a crumbled piece of paper. The next day, in the assembly I think, the principal tried to know who the boy was. Every boy was tightlipped. There was pindrop silence. When he did not get any response, the principal said, “Laataa ho, to…n haruko aaaa…nt tyahi ho? Khaaali jiskyaaaunu maa..tra? Ma bhaaaa ta chheowmaaa goera I LOVE YOU bhanthe…
Dear all, I am trying to contact someone official at SUMI but the website won’t let me send an email. I am a PhD student in Scotland researching material culture collections made by Scottish missionaries in the early 20th century in/around Darjeeling and Kalimpong. I think one of the men I am researching worked with Dr. Sutherland at the School in the early 20th century. If anyone knows who I could contact at the school about historic information, please let me know!
With kindest Regards…
great to hav u in this post page…..dud! atleast i got u from the same CST Kpg, family.
I realy thnx u for trying to get my school website.
Sumians……………happy Dusherra & Dipawali to you all.
Perhaps, you might be in other part of the world (Out of India)and earning pots of money or living luxurious life…whatever………..please don’t forget the time & days that you have spent in S.U.M.I as well as the knowledge and extra skill that you have learnt in S.U.M.I(Such as dancing, singing, playing football etc)Whatever & wherever we are today is not becoz of our qualification or knowldege but it’s becoz of the lesson taught by our beloved teachers. Hats off to all our Payro Gurubabu ani Guruama lai……
God be with you all always.
This is an appeal to all ex-students of S.U.M.Institution to browse school’s website http://www.sumi.in to know details about 125th Anniversary programmes scheduled on 10 to 13 March,2011. and comment at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am so proud that I am from KPG. Thank you so much for all your effort on this website. I agree with Celestina that each school should have their own website for all their ex-student to meet on-line.I hope it will happen in near future.
Great Job Congratulation.
Is there anybody from St Philomena Girls High School 90/91?
I have been trying to track my friends from Kalimpong college, Commerce students, joined class eleven (use to say)on 1992/93.We were quite a few but I lost contact with most of them. I would love to keep in touch with some of them, If you look at this website please comment on this page.Jenny
great job!why don’t u all update it,scatch the scratches made on top of the wrong informations & I think some schools are missing, they might feel bad.If there is anything I can do to help my mobile # is +919932470078.
I agree that this list needs some cleaning up but I haven’t gotten to it. (The strikethroughs are standard.. and helps show what changes have been made to phone number etc. It looks messy but I like the past information preserved).
If you have any information about schools that have been missed out, I would truly appreciate it if you could pass that along to me.
I Love my Kalimpong…its the best place on this earth. I studied in Dr. Graham’s Homes School and passed out in 1980. It is a great institution.
Could you please provide me the website of SUM Institution, Kalimpong?
Pranami Balika High School is not the correct name, it’s Pranami Balika Vidya Mandir. Thanks.
And also that ITBCI School is a co-ed, the medium of teaching is english with ICSE Board but not affilated to it and the school has boarding facility.
And lastly, I am not sure if the B T College near Chandra Lok and the Technical School at 11th Mile, near Bhutan House are closed?
I am from New York but you took me back to Kalimpong – a small but beautiful town. Many thanks for your good effort, please keep it up.
Indo-Tibetan Junior High School which is close to Jubilee High School is english medium with madhyamik board and for girls. This info was correct when I was there 10 years back.
Hi to everyone in and away from Kaimpong.
To Namgyal: Thank you for the information. I’ve made the necessary additions/corrections. 🙂 -Admin
Thank you admin for making such an informative page, Jubilee high school is now upgraded to higher secondary school and it’s official name is Kalimpong Jubilee Higher Sec. School. Please make it correction.
