List of Schools in Kalimpong

This page contains a list of schools and institutes in Kalimpong along with some relevant information about them. Hopefully this list will be useful for prospective students or parents/guardians etc.

I have long wanted to set this list up but only got around to doing it now. The information has been collected from various sources. I would like to thank all those who helped by contributing tidbits of info, especially the good folks of the Darjeeling Forum, and lots of thanks to SP for compiling the information.

This list is in no way comprehensive or complete at this moment so please expect to see errors or omissions. If you do spot any, please drop me a line to let me know, or say so in the comments thread below.

If there are any schools/institutes in Kalimpong that I’ve missed out, please do let me know. I’d be grateful for any information that will help me “fill-in-the-blanks” below. 😀

Cheers,

-Update: Thanks to Mr. Vimal Khawas for providing additional information.

The state board schools like SUMI, Kumudini had nepali as the medium of instruction (with books written in Nepali till class V) till about 10-12 years ago. However, the government of west bengal keeping in mind the importance of english instructed these schools to follow english in primary standard. Although by and large teachers in these schools still teach in Nepali (mode of lecture), but the books are written in English.

Good info about school…..I guess thatz what Kalimpong is famous for.Is the backbone of the economy there………….but the present condition is really deteriorating the name……for the past couple of years many outstation student are leaving and prefer to study in elsewhere..Can’t blame them…..It was said to me by an Educationalist there, that after the long agitation in the ’80, it took several years to regain the name and trust…….as history repeats itself, it seem to me that the same is happening……sad to say that the white Kanchanjunga is red now…..As per “Gorkhaland” is concerned it seem to me that , itz not how we get it but who brings it. I wish the hills were as beautiful as itz name and nature.

Great work! keep it up.Proud to be associated with S.U.M.I.(Scottish Universities Mission Institution). There’s a correction to be made It’s Sutherland Memorial Primary Section(S.M.P.S.)and not Sutherland Memorial Nursery School. Please mention that our school is celebrating it’s 125th anniversary in 2011.

Yes, as a product of St Joseph’s Convent (in those days they took in li’l boys!) and eventually Goethals Memorial School my heart belongs to Kalimpong, after all it’s home.

You guys reminded me of my SUMI days. I passed out from SuMI in the year 1982. Let me share with you all one moment of my sumi days. One day a girl from Girls’ High School complained to our the then principal, shree P. R. Pradhan that one of the boys sitting in the gallery in front of the Primary Section and facing the road, had passed a comment and thrown a crumbled piece of paper. The next day, in the assembly I think, the principal tried to know who the boy was. Every boy was tightlipped. There was pindrop silence. When he did not get any response, the principal said, “Laataa ho, to…n haruko aaaa…nt tyahi ho? Khaaali jiskyaaaunu maa..tra? Ma bhaaaa ta chheowmaaa goera I LOVE YOU bhanthe…

Dear all, I am trying to contact someone official at SUMI but the website won’t let me send an email. I am a PhD student in Scotland researching material culture collections made by Scottish missionaries in the early 20th century in/around Darjeeling and Kalimpong. I think one of the men I am researching worked with Dr. Sutherland at the School in the early 20th century. If anyone knows who I could contact at the school about historic information, please let me know!
    With kindest Regards…

    Hi Admin,
I am so proud that I am from KPG. Thank you so much for all your effort on this website. I agree with Celestina that each school should have their own website for all their ex-student to meet on-line.I hope it will happen in near future.
    Great Job Congratulation.

  19. Hi Bidhan,

    Thank you.

I agree that this list needs some cleaning up but I haven’t gotten to it. (The strikethroughs are standard.. and helps show what changes have been made to phone number etc. It looks messy but I like the past information preserved).

If you have any information about schools that have been missed out, I would truly appreciate it if you could pass that along to me.

    Thanks

Pranami Balika High School is not the correct name, it’s Pranami Balika Vidya Mandir. Thanks.

And also that ITBCI School is a co-ed, the medium of teaching is english with ICSE Board but not affilated to it and the school has boarding facility.

And lastly, I am not sure if the B T College near Chandra Lok and the Technical School at 11th Mile, near Bhutan House are closed?

I am from New York but you took me back to Kalimpong – a small but beautiful town. Many thanks for your good effort, please keep it up.
