List of Schools in Kalimpong

This page contains a list of schools and institutes in Kalimpong along with some relevant information about them. Hopefully this list will be useful for prospective students or parents/guardians etc.

I have long wanted to set this list up but only got around to doing it now. The information has been collected from various sources. I would like to thank all those who helped by contributing tidbits of info, especially the good folks of the Darjeeling Forum, and lots of thanks to SP for compiling the information.

This list is in no way comprehensive or complete at this moment so please expect to see errors or omissions. If you do spot any, please drop me a line to let me know, or say so in the comments thread below.

If there are any schools/institutes in Kalimpong that I’ve missed out, please do let me know. I’d be grateful for any information that will help me “fill-in-the-blanks” below. 😀

Cheers,

-Update: Thanks to Mr. Vimal Khawas for providing additional information.

The state board schools like SUMI, Kumudini had nepali as the medium of instruction (with books written in Nepali till class V) till about 10-12 years ago. However, the government of west bengal keeping in mind the importance of english instructed these schools to follow english in primary standard. Although by and large teachers in these schools still teach in Nepali (mode of lecture), but the books are written in English.

I saw a name Amit Ray in “Responses” section. Is it the same Amit Ray who studied school time in Kalimpong and later graduated from Jadavpur University in Electrical Engineering (1975). If yes, love to hear from him more.

  14. Hi,

I was left at a girl’s convent in Kalimpong when I was about 18 months of age 1941 by my parents who were in Calcutta. Although a little boy, the nuns couldn’t resist me because I had golden curly hair. I think it must have been St Joseph’s. I can’t remember it and never went back but in later years I was in boarding school in the Murree Hills in Pakistan and that was a hill station too so I expect it was similar. But Kalimpong is special to me. Whenever there are documentaries on about Darjeeling and the little railway, I love to see it.

Best wishes to you all there and all those from there who think of home.

Hi Claire I left Dr. Grahams Homes in ’55. JA Graham was John Anderson Graham the founder of the school perhaps you may care to get in touch with me & I will attempt to assist you in your search. The bible you have is what all children received when they were leaving school.

just had to bring to your notice a few aberrations…
it is not BB Pradhan Management School but BB Pradhan Management College (strictly speaking this is not a ‘college’ but a more evolved study center for distance education courses run by Sikkim Manipal University…a UGC approved college has stringent norms for selecting lecturers [now called assistant professors as opposed to associate professors who belong to a slightly higher pedagogical hierarchy] through nationwide exams such as NET or state specific ones called SLET)..
also Good Shepherd Hotel Management Institution is not approved by the AICTE (all india council for technical education) though curiously that makes them stand in the haloed company of institutes such as the Indian School of Business (rated higher than the IIMs in a number of parameters)and Great Lakes School of Management who have not yet (or bothered to) get that AICTE tag, which like all things in India is as much a political and commercial benchmark as it is an educational one)
lastly it is Mary Scott Home of the Blind run by the Salvation Army..Marie on the other hand is the name of a popular biscuit …

also the School of Vocational Studies was actually School of Vocational Studies and Languages..it used to operate out of the SUMI primarcy school campus..this institution has now gone defunct..its founder Mr Yusuf Simmick whom can safely call the progenitor of NGO movements in Kalimpong runs a course for the educated unemployed out at Pudung..

Once again it’s me “GORKHEE” Choro Ajay………Gorkhee Namestee to you all …..Well, Whatever we do…we do for ourself, for our own selfish intrest if i am not wrong Is n’t? Now time has come ……lets do something for our “Janma Bhumi(MATO)” where we born and brought up .I Personally, appeal to all “Gorkha”Daju, bahi, bahini, mama, maiju, kaka, kaki across whole world to join hands togather and make an identity of “Vir Gorkha” which is posible only if we make Gorkhaland.Pull up the socks, leave personal matters Such as ” tallo Goan ko, mathilo goan ko. Falana /Diskana, jhra ko kaam, batt ko kaam etc and raise the voice unanimously.

    I need/want/love Gorkhaland….
